For many students in the health professions there are few alternatives to student debt in order to complete their training. Fortunately, Shasta Community Health Center (SCHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Dedicated to serving underserved and marginalized patients, SCHC is Federal and State eligible and a very competitive loan repayment site. Below are some links to some of those loan repayment options. We also have staff to provide guidance and assistance as you plan your financial strategy. Moreover, as an added benefit, those who become regularly employed with us after training are given a generous monthly loan repayment stipend while your federal/state applications are in process. Check these links and let us know how we can help you.
The Scribe Healthcare Advanced Recruitment Pathway (SHARP) Program aims to facilitate and empower SCHC scribes pursuing medical/PA/NP education by providing scribing opportunities, shadowing experiences, mentoring, lecture attendance, and the chance to present a quality improvement project. Our program aims to foster, inspire, and assist local individuals committed to returning as healthcare providers in rural Northern California.

SCHC is proud to be a participant in the University of California’s “PRograms In Medical Education” (PRIME) which is designed to produce physician leaders who are trained in and committed to helping California’s underserved communities. SCHC as an academic partner with the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, and its PRIME focus on finding and training the best and the brightest medical students for a fulfilling career in a rural medicine, is ideally suited to providing an exceptional rural outpatient experience in pediatrics and general primary care. Shasta CHC, with its core of exceptional pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants serving nearly a quarter of the population of Shasta County, offers the UCD PRIME medical student an outstanding experience, exposing them to demanding pathology, combined with psycho-social challenges often found in rural communities where the primary care clinician plays an even greater critical role in helping patients manage their health. Shasta CHC also offers a wide array of other potential experiences including outreach to the homeless. Under a stable and experienced medical staff, the Rural-PRIME medical student will be challenged and supported helping to prepare them for a rewarding career in rural based primary care medicine.
UCSF Senior Dental StudentsText
Shasta Community Health Center has a working relationship with the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry. Senior dental students are able to sign up for a three week rotation whereby they work with SCHC’s dentists and experience life in our dental clinics and in the Redding/Anderson area in general. These rotations happen almost every month throughout the year and are coordinated by the UCSF School of Dentistry for their students. Redding is located in beautiful Northern California at the top of the Sacramento River Valley. Surrounded on three sides by designated wilderness areas, Redding is an attraction for those looking for an uncrowded experience, hiking, skiing, water sports, or just "less traffic." Redding has a population of 90,000 with numerous surrounding smaller communities. Redding is the major medical referral center between Sacramento and Oregon.
Located conveniently on I-5, events in Sacramento and San Francisco can be reached within 2-3 hours' drive. The beautiful Northern California coast is 150 miles to the west, with state parks and redwood forests close by. Living costs are typically much less in the Redding area, compared to larger metro areas of California.
Residents of the greater Redding area have found it the ideal blend of infrastructure and services - and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Family centered events, schools, sports, and culture are relatively easy and inexpensive to access. Many residents choose to stay and practice here; Redding is indebted to the Family Practice programs that continue to attract and supply the bulk of primary care physicians in the area.
Two major hospitals serve the community – Shasta Regional Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center/Redding. A combined 400 bed availability provides exceptional medical and surgical services with a broad range of primary and specialty care. We are especially fortunate to have a talented and dedicated medical community that provides outstanding care to our patients.

Redding regularly invites cultural opportunities to the area for its residents to enjoy. The Redding Convention Center, Cascade Theatre, and Riverfront Playhouse are some of the venues available. Local high school music programs rival collegiate productions and prepare many students for attending conservatory level training upon graduation.
Several wonderful dining establishments find their home in the Redding area. Despite the relatively rural location, the hungry patron can easily find something special to tickle the palate, and at a reasonable cost.
Redding is the recreationalist's dream. Easy access to mountain biking, rock climbing, water and snow-skiing, hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities are unparalleled here. Many residents take the opportunity to unwind after hospital or clinic by boating, kayaking, or just relaxing in the premium outdoors of the California Northstate. Resident classes have been know to purchase a ski boat and have it harbored at nearby Whiskeytown Lake for quick evening or weekend getaways. Personal life-balance is encouraged at SCHC.
