Making S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Did you know that most resolutions fail because they are: too vague or unrealistic? Here is what you do to have the most success with your New Year’s Resolutions!
Your goals should be S.M.A.R.T.

Specific: Your resolution should be clear.

  • For example, saying “I want to lose weight” is too vague. “I want to lose 8 pounds over two months” is better.

Measurable: You need to be able to measure your goal.

  • This might be simple for goals such as weight loss, which is easily trackable. If, for example, your goal is to save $50.00 on groceries each month– keep a journal detailing your savings to see how successful you have been.

Achievable: Your goal shouldn’t be too big that it leaves you frustrated, choose something you think you can be successful at.

  • If your goal is to go out to dinner with friends every day of the week, that probably isn’t realistic. A goal of every other week may be a better option here.

Relevant: Is this goal relevant in your life?

  • Does it really matter to you, or does it matter more to someone else? Your goal has to be your own– something you want to do.

Time-bound: The timeline for reaching your goal should also be practical.

  • If you’re planning to fit wellness into your routine, your goal will probably be over the next couple of months, while something like saving for retirement can take decades.
