January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Cervical Cancer can often be prevented. Getting a pap smear and getting vaccinated (shots) for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) are the best ways to keep from getting the disease. Cervical Cancer is easy  to cure when found and treated early.

  • Since regular pap smears began in the United States, Cervical Cancer rates have gone down by 75%.
  • Pap smears can detect changes in cervical cells before they become cancer. Removing these cells prevents Cervical Cancer over 95% of the time.

How can I get screened for Cervical Cancer?
Shasta Community Health Center has a women’s health clinic with female clinicians who can give you a pap smear. Appointments are available Monday through Thursday. Call (530) 246-5710 to schedule a visit. Most insurances cover this for free.

How to Set Goals that Work

It can be a stressful to think about changes you want to make, or things you want to get done. Action plans help make changes and tasks easier to accomplish by breaking them into smaller, easier to do steps. Here is what you need to know to make your New Years’ resolutions a success!

Making an Action Plan

  1. Something YOU want or set your mind to do. This isn’t the time to do what someone else wants you to do. To be successful, you should want, or decide, to do this task.
  2. Achievable and something you can get done in the next week.
  3. Action-specific. For example, relaxing isn’t an action, but taking a warm bath is. Relaxing is the RESULT of taking a bath.
  4. Answer the questions:
    1. What? (Specific action)
    2. How much? (time, distance, or amount)
    3. When? (time of day or which days  of the week)
    4. How often? (number of days this week that you will do this action)
  5. Confidence level of 7 or higher. On a scale of 0-10, how sure are you that you will complete your whole action plan?

Example of an Action Plan
This week I want to:

  • Clean the garage
  • 1 hour a day
  • In the evening, after dinner
  • Two days this week

I have a confidence level of 8 out of 10 that I will successfully complete my action plan.
