The American Dental Association’s “Give Kids a Smile” campaign, coordinated by Shasta Community Health Center, along with other local dentists and community supporters, had a successful event providing FREE dental care to UNINSURED, low income children ages 1 to 18 on February 5th. At this one day event 115 children were served at the Redding location, 37 at the Shasta Lake location and 55 at the Anderson location for a total of 207 uninsured children served, up from 138 children last year. Many thanks go to all of the volunteers who made this event possible.

Shasta Community Health Center participates in the American Dental Association’s “Give Kids A Smile” national campaign offering free dental care to uninsured, low income children 1 to 18 years old. This is the centerpiece to the National Children’s Dental Health Month and is observed every year on the first Friday in February. The national event started in 2002 and has grown to serve many hundred thousand children across the country each year. We have participated since 2005 and served over 100 children each year.

Shasta Community Health Center was recognized as the winner of the very prestigious “Virgil Covington” award at last Friday evening Annual Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce “Virgil Covington” Industry Award dinner in front of several hundred local business people. Each year The Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce recognizes one industry to focus on and this year it was Healthcare. This award recognizes that SCHC is a “significant part of the community of Shasta County;” “a respected company among its peers and within the community”. The award further acknowledges SCHC as a “noteworthy example in service to their profession, industry, and the community”, and that SCHC “has demonstrated an enduring commitment to the future well-being of this community”. This is a great honor for our organization, a truly coming of age recognition for the tens of thousands of people we serve and the lives we touch.

Due to a recent change in state law, the Department of Health Care Services will no longer pay for some Medi-Cal benefits for most adults ages 21 and older. This change of law goes into effect on July 1, 2009. Availability of the following Medi-Cal benefits has changed for adults: dental services, acupuncture services, podiatric services, psychology services, and incontinence creams and washes. All other Medi-Cal services will remain unchanged at this time.
Additional information can be found on the Medi-Cal website at http://www.medi-cal.ca.gov.
