SCHC and Public Health Excellence Awards 2009!
The Shasta County Public Health Advisory Board has established an annual Excellence in Public Health Awards program. Public Health can be thought of as ‘organized community efforts that prevent disease and promote health.’ This program provides awards to those community members who have gone the extra mile to promote an area of public health. Joe Villalobos, MD: For your enthusiasm and compassion when caring for the total needs of the people you serve living with HIV/AIDS.
Peter Murphy: As an intern at Shasta Community Health Center, Peter Murphy devised an innovative and unique outreach effort to teach young people about available health services. His video, “Where the Health is Peter”, which received nearly 4,000 hits on YouTube. This youth-oriented video shows Shasta Community Health Center staff and interns dancing in front of 67 north state landmarks. This fun and creative approach to youth health outreach raised awareness among youth and young adults about available health services at Shasta Community Health Center.
Elaine Best: It takes a special person to volunteer her time and energy to serve the homeless population in our community. When the Good News Rescue Mission lost funds for continuing healthcare and prevention services, Elaine Best partnered with Shasta County Public Health to screen shelter participants for Tuberculosis, provide hepatitis and immunization vaccinations, and arranged with a local provider to donate chest x-rays services. A registered nurse by trade, Elaine gives freely of her knowledge, time and spirit to those in need.
